Guangji Bridge

Guangji Bridge (also known as Bi Tianqiao and Tongji Bridge) is the only large-span seven-hole stone arch bridge on the ancient canal. The bridge is 78.7 meters long, 6.12 meters wide and 5.2 meters wide at the top. It is equipped with 80 stone steps and stone columns with plain faces. The bridge columns are decorated with cirrus clouds and drum-shaped stones. During the reign of Emperor Hongzhi of the Ming Dynasty, when the bridge collapsed, the common people relied on ferries to get to and from each other. Whenever the wind was high and the waves were sharp, people always fell into the water and died. At this time, Ningbo volunteer Chen Shouqing stepped forward to raise funds to build the bridge. Because of the huge amount of money needed, Chen Shouqing took a convenient boat to the capital and bound himself with chains to solicit donations from officials and citizens. The incident shocked the government, the queen mother and the prince helped Jin Ci silver one after another, and the court's officials also gave money one after another. Chen Shouqing raised a large sum of money. It took nine years to finally build the seven-arch long bridge, which was built in 1498 of the first year.
